Kan’s open-source code is a practical difference from many hosted-only board tools. Its official repository documents Docker Compose deployment with a web app and PostgreSQL. Self-hosting may suit teams with operations capacity and data-control needs. It does not remove the need for backups, access controls, patching or a tested restore process. Cloud users can avoid managing those servers, but should review current data and plan terms.

On 23 October 2026, Kan’s own pricing page showed a Free plan at $0 for one user with unlimited boards and cards; a Teams plan displayed at $8 per user per month; and an Enterprise plan with sales-led pricing. Trade-offs: some integrations are still described as upcoming, the sold-out lifetime deal is not buyable, and self-hosting adds maintenance responsibility. Kan’s current public pages do not establish that it replaces a dedicated time tracker, CRM or advanced reporting system.
If Kan’s simple board model fits your work, compare it directly with your existing Trello setup using the same sample project. If your main need is tracking billable hours rather than task status, a time-tracking product is a different category.
